What Is Insomnia?
Insomnia is the most frequent sleep problem reported by adults. Nearly one-half of all adults have occasional sleep problems during the year. Insomnia is the failure to fall asleep or to maintain sleep, usually due to an underlying condition or difficulty. Both men and women of all ages have insomnia, but it is more frequent in females and older adults.
Understanding Insomnia
Insomnia can include psychiatric or medical conditions like depression, anxiety, substance abuse disorders, restless legs syndrome, obstructive sleep apnea, and other chronic medical conditions. Medications, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol can also cause the development or persistence of insomnia. There are some common drugs like decongestants, anti-depressants, antihistamines, and others that can cause sleep disruption or insomnia. Before stopping any medication, however, it is imperative to discuss your concerns with your primary doctor first.
